Chennai, Aug 20: Union Home Minister Amit Shah met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Chennai ahead of the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council, scheduled to be held at Kovalam in Chengalpattu.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss matters of mutual importance ahead of the regional council meeting, which brings together the Centre and governments of southern states to strengthen cooperation and address issues requiring coordinated action.
The Southern Zonal Council serves as an important platform for promoting cooperative federalism and resolving inter-state issues through dialogue. Key areas expected to receive attention include regional development, infrastructure, water-related matters, Centre-state coordination and other issues affecting the southern states.
The council comprises Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry, while Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep participate as special invitees.
The meeting between Amit Shah and Chief Minister Vijay comes ahead of the wider deliberations and highlights the importance of continued coordination between the Centre and Tamil Nadu on development and regional priorities.
The upcoming council meeting is expected to provide a platform for constructive discussions and greater cooperation among the southern states, with the broader objective of supporting balanced regional development and strengthening Centre-state relations.
