Greater Noida: A 44-year-old factory worker from Dadri with a completely crushed and amputed fingers of his right hand was successfully restored after a marathon 8 hours long surgery at Yatharth Superspecialty Hospital, omega 1, Greater Noida.

Pertaining to the emergency situation, the multi-disciplinary team of doctors were swift to respond to the case, and revascularization of his limb was performed overnight.

Since first six hours is the golden period for restoration of blood supply, early intervention and involvement of the doctors had saved the limb and its functions which was totally detached from his hand.

Aamod Kumar (name changed) who works as a machine operator in a local company in Dadri, met with a severe accident with crush injury of right hand as a part of the machine got stuck and cut his fingers apart from his hand. He was brought to the emergency with severe bleeding and his fingers were detached from his hands. With severe bleeding he was rushed to Yatharth Hospital in a very critical condition. His hand bones were fractured and there was no blood supply, since his muscles and nerves were also severely crushed.

Due to continuous bleeding the patient was immediately resuscitated and taken to the Operation theatre within an hour for further procedure. Immediate and prompt intervention was done by Dr. Parth Pratim (Plastic Surgeon) and his team

Explaining about the challenging procedure, Dr Parth Pratim, Plastic surgery, Yatharth Super Specialty Hospital, omega 1, Greater Noida, said “The patient was brought in a very critical condition with severe blood loss and any further delay in arriving to the hospital would have costed him his right hand. Luckily, with the prompt response from the emergency team, the multi-disciplinary team including Anesthesia, Orthopedics and plastic surgery started the procedure. After carefully removing the machine from his forearm, the blood supply of his limb was restored along with repair of the tendon and nerves. Unfortunately, due to the extensive damage, the index finger could not be reimplanted. Post operatively the patient is doing well with good blood supply and all normal movements of hand.”

Thanking the hospital staff and entire medical team after successful surgery, Aamod Kumar said “I am very thankful to the doctors at Yatharth Hospital, for saving my right hand and providing me a hope of survival. During the time of accident, was in such a trauma, physically and mentally that I will never be able to have my right hand back. But without having any complications, the doctors took the pain throughout the night to perform the surgery and restore my hand.”

With advanced procedures, equipment and specialized doctors available from various specialties 24 X 7, this procedure of limb revascularization is an example of a life saving surgery. Since the patient was the only earning member, he is thankful to the hospital for saving his limb and life. He has been advised to perform basic activities for the time being and avoid strenuous activities and lifting objects. Within a few weeks of time Aamod Kumar will be able to get back to work and assist his family financially.
