Bangalore International Grandmasters Open Chess Tournament 2024

Bangalore, Karnataka, 28th October 2023 – In a historic moment for the world of chess, the Bangalore Urban District Chess Association (BUDCA) is proud to announce the official launch of the tournament logo and an exclusive video teaser for the 1st Bangalore International Grandmasters Open Chess Tournament 2024. This exciting event is scheduled to take place from 18th to 26th January 2024 at the prestigious Sri Kanteerava Indoor Stadium, under the patronage of the Karnataka State Chess Association (KSCA), the All-India Chess Federation (AICF), and the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The championship is generously supported by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment & Sports, the Sports Authority of India, and the Karnataka Olympic Association.

This landmark event is expected to draw participation from over 2500 players, including a remarkable 50 International and Indian Grandmasters. Chess enthusiasts and players from across the country and beyond are eagerly anticipating this historic tournament, which marks the first time such an event is being held in Bangalore, Karnataka. Organizing Secretary Mrs.Sowmya said, “We are receiving excellent responses for registration of players both from India and abroad. 3 out of 4 Karnataka’s GMs – namely, GM Thejkumar, GM Stany GA, and GM Pranav Anand, will be featuring in the tournament, along with WGM Isha Sharma, who is with us today. Around 15 International GMs have confirmed their participation, and we are also expecting some of the world-class players and talented youngsters to be a part of this tournament – GM Nigel Short, GM Boris Gelfand, super GM Anish Giri, GM Nihal Sarin to name a few.

5 Times World champion GM Vishwanathan Anand has agreed to grace the inauguration of the event with his presence. We are going to promote this event with innovative programs like, “Cyclothon for Chess” and “Run for Chess” which are going to be held in Karnataka to welcome new faces to the World of Chess. We also plan to organize discussions, seminars and other activities in Universities, Colleges and Gated communities.

Ms. Dana Reizniece-Ozala, Deputy Chair of FIDE Management Board & Women’s Grandmaster (WGM), expressed her excitement during the press conference in Bangalore. She stated, “I’m thrilled to be here in Bangalore, and it’s fascinating to see the 1st Bangalore International Grandmasters Open Chess Tournament 2024 take shape. With over 2500 players and the participation of renowned International and Indian Grandmasters, this event is truly monumental.”

Ms. Dana continued, “India has been at the forefront of a chess revolution ever since the legendary Vishwanathan Anand became world champion. Today, we see the emergence of new champions like Praggnanandhaa, Anish Giri, Koneru Humpy, and many more. The chess community in India is vibrant and growing. This event is even more special because it coincides with the celebration of 100 years of FIDE. It’s a remarkable milestone, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”
