Mumbai, Mar 23: Bailou has unveiled its limited-edition Disco Saree Collection, a bold reinterpretation of traditional handloom designed for modern celebration and evening wear. With this launch, the brand reimagines the saree as a contemporary, expressive garment, moving beyond its conventional association with heritage and ceremonial occasions.
Conceptualised as a series of “Cocktail Sarees,” the collection embodies a spirited blend of playfulness, elegance, and individuality. Drawing inspiration from the essence of the disco era—freedom, movement, and joy—the designs translate these elements into a refined, forward-looking aesthetic suited for today’s social settings.
At the core of the collection lies the intricate craftsmanship of Jamdani weaving, an age-old extra-weft technique that allows motifs and patterns to be woven directly into the fabric. Each saree is handwoven by skilled artisans, emerging as a complete textile from the loom without the need for heavy embellishment.
A key highlight of the collection is its innovative weaving method, where golden sequins are embedded within the fabric during the weaving process rather than being applied on the surface. This is achieved using a double-cloth technique that creates delicate pockets within the textile, allowing sequins to be seamlessly integrated. This unique “pocket-sequin” approach has earned recognition with the UNESCO Seal of Excellence for its technical innovation and craftsmanship.
The sarees are further enhanced through nuanced artisanal techniques, including hand-shifting of threads to create tactile textures, knotting methods for structural detailing, and organza-based Jamdani weaving for wave-like borders and pallus. These elements come together to create a subtle three-dimensional effect that evolves with movement.
Visually, the collection explores depth and contrast through a palette of deep, after-dark tones such as black, charcoal grey, and midnight blue. Against these rich bases, delicate gold accents appear suspended within the fabric, offering a quiet, fluid radiance. The interplay between sculptural textures and soft silk drapes results in pieces that are both lightweight and visually striking.
