India’s Data Centre Boom Grows as AI and Digital Business Accelerate

India’s data centre industry is expanding rapidly as businesses increase their use of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital payments and other technology-driven services.

The country’s operational data centre capacity reached 1,789 MW during January-June 2026, with the sector adding around 178 MW of capacity in the first six months of the year, according to an industry report.

The growth reflects the rising amount of data being generated by businesses and consumers. As more companies shift their operations to digital platforms, they require reliable infrastructure to store, process and manage information.

Data centres now play a central role in supporting several parts of the economy. They provide the computing infrastructure needed for cloud applications, online businesses, digital financial services, artificial intelligence and other technology platforms.

The rapid adoption of AI is creating another major source of demand. AI applications require significant computing power, which is encouraging data centre operators to invest in advanced servers, high-speed connectivity and improved cooling systems.

Cloud computing is also helping drive the sector. Businesses can use shared data-centre infrastructure instead of building and maintaining large IT facilities of their own. This allows companies to expand their digital operations more easily as their requirements increase.

The expansion of data centres is also creating opportunities for businesses outside the technology sector. New facilities require power, construction, networking equipment, cooling systems, cybersecurity, physical security and maintenance services. This is generating activity across a wider industrial and services ecosystem.

Reliable power supply is particularly important because data centres operate continuously. With computing requirements increasing, operators are also paying greater attention to energy efficiency, advanced cooling technologies and renewable energy.

The growth of the sector could therefore support investment across several areas, including power infrastructure, engineering, construction, telecommunications and technology services.

For businesses, stronger data-centre infrastructure can provide faster and more reliable access to digital services. It can support online transactions, cloud-based applications, e-commerce platforms, data analytics and AI-powered operations.

India’s expanding data-centre capacity highlights the growing importance of digital infrastructure to the wider economy. As businesses continue to generate more data and adopt emerging technologies, demand for secure, reliable and energy-efficient computing facilities is expected to remain an important part of the country’s digital growth.
